Default How do you start YOUR car?

This may sound like a silly question at first glance but as a person who is on his first Jaguar (XJ6 3.2 Auto) I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.
Anyway, here is how I do it and if you think that my way is wrong, please pipe up and tell me why.
OK, I get in and adjust all the stuff that 'er indoors has altered. Things like the seat and rear view mirror. Then I put the key in the ignition and give it a turn until all the dashboard lights come on. I then wait a few seconds until the majority of the lights go out and then, with my foot OFF the Go Faster pedal, I turn the key a little bit more. This engages the starter motor and the car fires up. If she doesn't fire up straight away, I give the Go Faster pedal a few pokes and that seems to do the trick.
The main issue here is the wait after the dashboard lights all come on.
Some folk say that there is no need for the wait but my reasoning is that A) It doesn't do any harm.... and B) It gives all the components time to self check before they go out (if that's what they do)

Any info appreciated.
Cheers,
Steve

With my XJR I jump in, fasten my belt, turn the key to start, drop 'er in gear....and go. No pausing, no pedal poking, no nuttin'.

If it's at or below freezing and/or the car has been unused in a few days I'll let her warm up for a minute or so before taking off.

My old V12 was a different story....but that's a different story :-)

Cheers

I agree.

Unless its a diesel, the lights etc will look after themselves, and soon tell you if there is a female moment going on.

Mine also is a 3.2 "big block", and I park the best bit on the seat, insert the key and simply go straight to "start the engine", about 3 rotations and all going well, THEN reset all her doings while the thing warms up a tad.

NO poking or prodding EVER. If that is required you got something evil going on. More than likely the "cam angle sensor" is mistimed, or the sparkers are just plain OLD.

As Doug said, the 2 V12's, HAHAHAHA, the MK10, IF SHE WANTS TO BEHAVE, usually NOT, the S Type 3.4ltr, INSTANTLY, and the rest, NO COMMENT printable here.

Never touch pedals, always a recipe for a no start. Could never educate my Ex, no longer a problem.
