Default How often to change plus/wires in the car?

hi, I have a 96 XJ6, and was wondering how often are you suppoed to change the spark plugs, and wires. I did all 6 plus nearly 2 years ago with the nkg platinum, but hav never dont the plugs since I had the car and the car has 109,000 on the clock. Are there are ways of telling when you need to change the wires? thank you.

I don't think it's necessary to change the wires since the X300 uses discrete coils for each plug.

Also, I wouldn't recommend NKG plugs. It was NKG plugs that caused stalling in my dads car. The X300 is very sensitive to spark plug resistance - it's recommended that you only use the champion RC9YC or RC12YC.

Thanks Oubadah,
I had forgotten your post re- plugs.
After all my problems with stalls over the last 6 weeks, I had forgotten your post.
Just took out the NKG's my mechanic put in and replaced them with Champions, and she's going like a charm.
I should have done it when you first suggested it, but mechanic said no!
I can't wait to tell him tomorrow...he's been pulling his hair out...Yesterday, we were pulling bits out of another client's car, to no avail!
Simple fix is best!
Thanks for your help Oubadah.
Your latest post saved me a trip to Archibald & Shorter (Local Dealer for you non- kiwis)
Cheers,
Phil

The plugs will probably go 60k miles. If the car is running well...no misfires, no loss of fuel economy, etc....I see no reason to change them. Pull 'em at 30k to check the gap and re-gap if needed. As mentioned there are no plug wires per se.

FWIW, I've run both the Champs and the NGK iridium and noticed no difference in any respect. The iridiums are supposed to be easier on the coils and thus my motivation for the change. One of those "feel good" things, I guess. Given the price of iridium plugs I'm not so sure I'd run out and do it again.

so if I understand this correctly there are no wires for the sparks, or they do exist but you do not need to change them? thanks.

They don't exist.

There are six coils which fit directly onto each spark plug. This is known as a "COP"--"Coil On Plug" design.

Exclamation NGK Iridium plugs, which heat range?

I have a 97 XJ6 and haven't changed the plugs in 3 years.
Wanted to go with NGK Iridium IX, but I get 2 different part numbers.
The NGK website says to go with BKR6EIX, while the lady at Canadian Tire said her system gives BKR5EIX, a 1 range point colder plug.

Any idea what the correct plug is for that engine?

There was also a link on the NGK site that talked about using a colder plug when you have 10% ethanol in your gas. Much of our gas in Canada is now a 10% ethanol blend, many pumps say may contain up to 10%, should I then be using a colder plug such as the BKR5EIX.

I was also told that the Champion Iridiums are just as good, and they cost 20% less.

What specific plugs should I use for every day driving, mostly city but also long drives on the highway on weekends?

Thanks,
Kevin
