Default How to test EGR Valve?

I removed the egr valve on my 97 XJ6 because of CEL code - P0400. Valve was definitely gunked solid in the closed position but was easily cleaned and moves freely. Re-installed with the hope CEL would go out after a few complete driving cycles - it has not.
Is it possible to apply 12 volts to any of the terminals on the valve to manually listen for a click or some way to see if the valve works at all.
Thanks.

It was my experience, that, even after replacing the EGR with a new unit, I had to clear the code and CEL with my scanner.
