Default Improve driver legroom?

Howdy all

I have spent some time searching, but maybe used incorrect terms.

I would like to move the driver seat further back than seems to be allowed by the factory tracks.

I also own a '98 XJ8 which has plenty of leg room, so I know there must be some method to make an adjustment.

I did remove the seat, and make sure that the tracks are clear, and the seat was running as far back as the tracks allow. On some other vehicles I have owned, you could mount the seat further back on the rail system, but no such luck on the Jag. The only other option I can see is to full dis-assemble the track system and re-engage the gearing further back. Maybe I am missing something? Or perhaps I can get a seat from an X308 and install? Seats need new upholstery anyhow, so I am fine with that solution.

TIA
Ken

I think the x308 seat rail moves back an additional 20mm compared to the x300.
The mounting points for the two generations are probably the same (don't quote me on that though), but its probably not a straight fit when it comes to electrical connectors - i think the x308 seats also have airbags in them?

this site has the electrical pinouts for the x300 seats, so worst case you might be able to just rewire the x308 seat to work on the x300.

My car had some seat rail extensions on it when i bought it, to move the seat further back.
Due to the way the seats are mounted it unfortunately also raised the seats a bit, decreasing headroom, making them pretty useless.
i naturally ended up removing them

I cannot offer any advice, only an anecdote your post reminded me of. My uncle is a very tall guy. 6'7". Back in the 80s he owned a Chevette! Obviously, he had significant legroom issues. His solution was to just remove the front seat altogether and sit on the back seat! Not suggesting that in any way but reminded me of that story.

News to me that there is a difference between the x300 and x308, and kind of counter intuitive given the general development path. Maybe it was indeed due to the airbag fitment, but 20 mm doesn’t seem like a material difference.
I am 6’2”, and have owned both x300 and x308. In each case the seats could go meaningfully further back than I needed ( completely eliminating the possibility of having a rear seat passenger.
By any chance do you have memory seats? Is that inhibiting your range of adjustment?

I have the memory seats; not sure if that is root cause. I do know I can go as far back as the track will allow.

I am only 5'11", but cannot get back as much as I would like. I also own a '98 and that seat will go father than I need.

It's not a steering wheel reach issue, its fumbling the throttle & brake pedal that gets annoying.

Thanks
Ken

Random thought, do you have the seats fully raised in terms of height? As they go up they go forwards, effectively restricting legroom.
