Default Indicator dilemma!

Hello chaps,

I would like to ask you all for some advice in relation to my recently purchased XJ 3.2 Sport (1997).

I've had the car a few weeks but not driven it much due to an issue with the right hand side (offside) indicators.

The entire right hand side indicators do not illuminate when either the stalk is signalled right, or when the hazards are on or when the central locking alarm fob is pressed.

I've checked every ground (using the ground location diagram) and they are all fine and clean.

The fuse hasn't blown and I've even swapped the Lamp Control Module with another one and the problem still continues!

I have noticed that the Lamp Control Module doesn't 'click' when the indicator stalk is signalled right but it does when signalled left so there's no issues with the left hand side of the car.

The bulbs are all ok, and visually, the wiring seems fine too.

Please can anyone offer me some advice!!

Many thanks.

Referencing the 97 wiring guide on page 80 and 82

By indicators you need to use the wording on the wiring guide so we're talking about the same thing .

The wording gets confusing in how the British calls a specific lamp and how an American does

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxj1997.pdf

You seem to have trouble shot it down to the column switchgear ( control stalk ) in you feeling for the lamp module clicking response . Even though the bulb socket and under car wire connectors commonly give fits

That's a strange one. If swapping a different Lighting Control Module didn't change anything, it could be a problem with the Body Processor Module. The three "inputs" you describe go into the BPM first. Maybe its output is incorrect to the LCM.

There would have to be at least three fuses, all blown, in order to get the same (or similar) effect: F5 in the front right box, and F9 and F18 in the rear box. Very unlikely.

Double-check the turn signal bulb in the rear fixture. It should be a GE PY21W or equivalent, with the offset tabs at the base. I've seen a different bulb jammed into the socket before, by a previous owner, which caused glitches probably due to shorting.

The 95 year model has 2 external lamp modules up to a certain production number reflected in the 95 wiring guide . There is the possibility you swapped a 95 module into your 97 giving you false troubleshooting information .

Thank you both for your suggestions so far. I'm also thinking it may be the BCM so I'll buy another and see if this cures it. I'm taking the car to a Jaguar specialist on Monday so I'll see what if they're able to shed any light on the issue. Thank you for your help.

Right Lady P! The earlier models, 1995 to VIN 739426 have three modules, the rear one (LNA2245AB for the UK) plus two up front near the front headlights and relays. They were called "Lighting Control Modules." From 739427 there was an update to one rear module only (LXF2245AA), which was then called the "Lamp Control Module."

Note that these modules are also called "Bulb Failure Modules" on Classic Parts and in the service manual. My service manual does not list the single updated LCM from VIN 739427 forward.

So Mibman, did you match up the correct LCM, with the same part number (LXF2245AA)? But I think if you tried the earlier version, the results probably would have been even worse than the problem you have now.

If you want to tinker with your issue on your 97 before you are to spend the money at the repair shop and how ever much that would cost you can troubleshoot the column stalk . The solution could be a simple loose wire on the control switch . This is a common problem on the later X308 model and is probably the same physical part .

Looking at page 86 of the linked 97 WD :

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxj1997.pdf

We are looking at the specific termed :: direction indicators:: or as Americans would call turn signals and if you look on the left side of the print you would see the switch before the wires go into the BPM

Since I think you have already dug out the BPM you can see the ground provided by the switch in one direction ( the good side ) and not see the ground in the suspect direction . Thin would be socket FC2 - 46 and FC2 - 18

If you don't want to go to the BPM to put a meter on it you can disassemble the switch on the column and see if a wire has come loose explaining you indicater problem . Easier to perform in my opinion . Then your solution would be to resodier the wire saving all that money from the shop . Like I said this is a comon solution I have read on the X308
