Default Key and Fob questions

I only have one black key and one fob for my "new" '95 XJ6 Vanden Plas, and I know I would be in trouble if the key were lost. Can aftermarket folks or key specialists make the key, or provide the fob, and do the programming? Any help on reasonable ways to do this without a huge expense would be appreciated.

Despite some differences in the security aspects of European versus U.S. models, I think the key/fob matters are the same. Apparently, all key "blanks" are the same, but they won't work until they have been programmed to the individual car and here in Europe you must have an original key to have this function performed, by a main dealer, who will have the necessary equipment.

As for the fob, there are many available on ebay and I've also read somewhere about a Saab fob which will work on our cars also. The main thing to be aware of is the frequency that they operate on, as there are two distinct frequencies. Someone with more info on this will chime in.

Setting up the fob to the car is a DIY procedure, with a sequence of events to be followed, the details of which escape me, but it involves turning on the ignition to position 1 ( I think) leaving the door open, rocking the Valet switch a number of times and then some...............

A search in the archives on "Fob programming" or the like should unearth the sequence/procedure.

In the meanwhile DON'T lose your key!!!

Thought I would add Programming as follows..
When...
  • Remote control batteries not replaced within 2 minutes
  • Remote control added or replaced
  • System malfunction

How..
  • Obtain all the remote controls
  • Ensure system not in valet mode. Remote boot release must operate.
  • If not: Cancel valet mode by opening the boot with one of the black keys.
  • Switch ignition ON. At the same time operate valet switch 5 times within 5 seconds.
  • The system will emit an acoustic signal to indicate start of programming procedure.
  • Press lock or unlock button of 1st remote control.
  • Operate valet switch. Ensure system beeps twice to confirm signal received.
  • To programme remaining remote controls proceed as follows:
  • Press lock or unlock button of next remote control.
  • Operate valet switch. ensure system beeps to confirm signal received.
  • To exit programme mode: Operate the valet switch and wait 15 seconds after the last remote control entry.
Note.. A maximum of 5 remote controls can be programmed.

  • Remote controls can also be programmed using diagnostic equipment.
I hope this helps..

Keyfobs.com says they have replacement fobs with or without an uncut key. Can anybody vouch for these items?
Also where can I find the key # of the original key which has long since disappeared?
