Leaking Coolant Like A Sieve -FIXED
Okay, coolant is leaking from my car like a sieve. I have no idea from where though. I checked the water pump, and the weep/vent hole on it. There doesn't appear to be any coolant leaking from the water pump or really anywhere near it. Is there another location where these cars are known to leak coolant from? The area around the reservoir is dry.
Edit: After a little search, I read it could be the thermostat, but how can I tell if it is? If it is the thermostat, where could the leak be coming from? Would simply replacing the thermostat theoretically stop the leak although I can't find the origin of the leak?
Edit 2: Some more info: The temperature gauge seemed to approach slightly below the 'N' (like it always does), with the same speed, although it may be approaching the normal mark slightly more quickly than normal.

Well, Bugga, now the list begins.
1) LH side of the engine bay, behind the header tank, is a myriad of hoses for the heater, AND, a small electric boost pump.
2) The hoses behind the water pump is another area.
3) The actual lower radiator hose, and the siamesed hoses into it.
4) The grommet in the bottom of the header tank that secures the low coolant sensor.
5) The various small hoses travelling from the header tank to the radiator and engine.
6) The radiator itself, it does have plastic tanks and they do leak with age.
7) The header tank itself.
That's about it for now. More may creep in as the night wears on, and the JD goes down, time will tell.

Okay, this morning, I was able to properly jack up the front of the car and have a looks see. The leak appears to be centering at the lowest point of the transmission (not transmission fluid though, still coolant), and closer to the passengers side of the car. I cannot visually see where any of the coolant is actually coming from.
After speaking on the phone with my father (I'm away at school, so this is the last thing I'd like to be doing right now), he suggested that it could potentially be the heater core, and the possibility of bypassing it. If this is a potential issue, where is the heater core located, and how could I bypass it?

To bypass the heater core locate the hoses (just below the brake resevour)going thru the firewall, disconct them and put a piece of tubing in them,(thus creating a loop excluding the heater core)make sure that the hose clamps are tight. you now will have no heat but also maybe no leaks.
I recently had had a bad water leak and after days of examination I found out it was a hose that come from the back of the water pump and it connects to a metal pipe that's bolted to the side of the engine under the intake manifold you might want to check there
Would anyone be able to tell me the size of the hose that I would need to use to potentially bypass the heater core? I'd rather know now and not need to bypass it than have to wait for a response to know the proper size of the hose. Thanks. This has been a horribly stressful weekend.

I have a 95 xjr and my problem is an on again off again coolant leak. It seems as if it is coming from the the back of the water pump area, not sure as the hoses to the back of the water pump look dry. Yet every once in a while it drops a fair amount of coolant then it stops, only to happen again a few days later. This is driving me crazy.
Mine was like a gusher - if it is the coolant bypass hose from the back of the water pump - under the intake - 3-hour job for me. Only a $20 part, but a real pain. If you need that, have a buddy help.
Well, it doesn't seem to be leaking from anywhere close to the water pump or thermostat. In fact, it seems like the leak is coming from an area under the windshield wiper motor. I suppose I'm going to have to remove the wiper motor and just have a proper looks see. Is there anything over there that could be causing this problem? It seems to just be various hoses.
I got a few pictures to help describe the situation.
Just to help set the scene: imgur: the simple image sharer
Underneath the wiper motor are the two hoses that connect to metal tubes that go into the dash (or the heater core?): imgur: the simple image sharer Are these the two hoses that I need to join to bypass the heater core? Do I need to join them, or can I just plug up both holes?

Good news everyone! It's just a simple leak in a hose. It only appeared to be leaking from the heater core because the hole in the hose was spraying on those other hoses. I only noticed it by finally getting a friend to rev the engine while I checked it out.

Check the gasket where the thermostat housing attaches to the cylinder head.
Took me months to identify a very slight leak there. I would've sworn that I had a leaking water pump, but I didn't!
Cheers

That was one of my thoughts as I never came across a hose that would leak and then stop. I will take a good look, can you tell me just how much work is involved in replacing the gasket? The lower bolts on the housing dont look as they will be able to clear the sc, does the sc need to be removed for this fix? Thank you.
