Hi MarylaLuna

Not sure why you've posted this in this forum, which is for the XJ Series models of 2003-2009. This series were the first modern Jaguars made totally of aluminium. Prevous models are all steel, although with aluminium engines from 1987.

If you can tell us what you're after we can help. The '97 will be an X300 model series, (still called an XJ6 like most !), with a straight six all-aluminium engine, and typical handsome Jaguar curvy body. These cars have a very strong reputation for longevity and reliability. The '86 will be an XJ6 Series 3, again with a straight six engine, and again very handsome, but this engine was first made in 1948 and designed in 1944 !! Whilst these cars can be made to go well and are a joy to drive, you have to know what you are getting into, and be fairly up-to-speed on maintenance issues.

So if you are new to Jaguar, the 97 might be better for you, the Series 3 models were the last of the XJ saloons first on sale in 1968 as Series 1 and then Series 2, with the Series 3s on sale from 1980.

Condition is everything for cars this old, and a test drive and inspection a must. Buying cars of this age on the internet sight-unseen is definitely not recommended. The '86 might be a gem, but only a look can tell you. The '97 might be good or a neglected old nail, so best to take a very careful look before buying. Are you into DIY on autos, or have a reliable and recommended Jaguar specialist near you ? YOu really need one of these, preferably both.

Hi Mary,

I think what Fraser is trying to say, kindly and gently, is,
ĄSi, muy loca!

You might try posting your question in both the Series III and X300 forums with more information about both cars to see if any members are willing to give you any advice, but I think Fraser's point that both cars were great when new, but only a knowledgeable, personal inspection can determine whether either of the cars you are considering is worth owning.

Cheers,

Don

The people selling these cars are locos. LOLs
They don't allow mechanic inspections.

Sorry for the post in wrong place again. I need a chart to keep all the lines and models straight (newbie)
