I own 2 1996 Jaguar XJ6’s…love the cars -pretty classic! One, we’ve been told needs a new engine at 126,000 miles…I’m skeptical ~ if anyone wants to advise…feel free to message I’ll send mechanic report. It’s in SLC with my daughter -she was driving it…my other one has 228,000 miles and engine is fine…thanks!!
X300 compression test as a spinning starter is a Doc I once saw , but saved on old broke computer
Unless the mechanic can show how things mechanically failed
Engine placed in a bore wash condition ( easy to do and engine will not start ) as this will fail compression test , there are 2 easy and cheap ways to correct and carry on forward
Hold gas pedal to floor and crank , this will cut off fuel by ECU seeing this / design and reestablish piston rings seal from oil on the bottom side of piston
Or remove plugs and place a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil on top of pistons , rotate crankshaft without starting to distribute oil along cylinder ( can be done by removing fuel pump relay or fuse in trunk ) , let soak overnight then put back together and start normally ( holding gas pedal to floor or goosing will not aid but counterproductive because ........... )
This 2nd method on light off will smoke , smoke a lot but the smell of victory , no more mosquitoes in Utah

Little detail , there is a rattling of the timing chain ( very robust to not need replacing ) resolved by a TSB of an upgraded timing chain tensioner with a large arrow cast into it
, may see a comparison ( does have arrow ) on yours if a later X300
The engine by design starts on the camshaft position sensor and switches over to the crankshaft position sensor after a point , the engine will start with the CMPS connector off but requires more engine rotations vs. instantaneously , There is a adjustment on the CMPS but not on the CKPS which the CMPS may have been put out of true
There are a couple of relays to place finger on to feel for click and not rely on sound
Right engine bay fuse box small relay # 9 in corner , powers engine ECU as 1st power
ECU controlled relay as large # 5 right that is controlled by the ECU and brings high current power back into ECU . power for fuel injectors and 1 / 2 the engine regulation sensors
Right Heelboard small relay in the corner of fuse box , this must close to power secret fuse for the fuel pump control fuse # 10
