Default max rev allowed ?

Hello,
today happened something which never happened before.
While pushing on the accelerator kind of racing a friend of mine mini's,
I saw rpms going up over 5000 to almost 6000 and at that point I got scared and took the foot off the pedal. I have always seen in the past gear shifts to happen at most 5000 rpm as highest and it is were the red zone starts. So for a couple of seconds the engine was above 5000rpm and closer to 6000. I do not know why this happened ?
May I have pushed too hard and hit the accelerator button switch behind it ?
What is max rpm value the engine can reach without wrecking it ?
thank you

The engine speed fuel cut-off function in the engine ECU operates at 5950rpm, so you can't "over-rev" the engine under load. The only way to "over-rev" the engine is if you manually select a gear ratio that is too low, and I would expect that the transmission ECU would prevent this from happening in an auto.
