Mystery water leak
1996 XJR
Odd problem in the XJR, the low-water warning comes on every few days and I have to dump about 4-5 litres of coolant into it. But, no steam from the exhaust but no small puddles under the car either. Where's it going?
The temp gauge never indicates a problem, but there is always a lot of heat from the expansion tank after a bit of a drive. I'm wondering if there's a tiny leak in the system onto something hot, or if it's just evaporating somewhere. Is this a common problem with these cars?

The 'could be' list is long.
Years ago I battled a coolant leak on my XJR/6. I never saw a leak much less a puddle, but I had to add coolant every few days.
Long story short it was the gasket between the cylinder head and the thermostat housing. Tiny drip.
Another leak that was hard to find was one of the heater hoses near the brake booster....foggy memory clouds the details at the moment. Anyhow, a tiny pinhole that opened up only from time to time. I discovered it only when I touched the hose 'just the right way" and saw a tiny stream of liquid.
Also...check all your hose clamps. Sometimes they loosen a bit.
Cheers
