Default Need help with XJ6 96 Rack and pinion and power steering pump.

hi, I am in need of a new rack because I have a bad valve in the one I currently, so can someone please tell me where is the best place to purchase one for a resonable price with a greta warrenty and all. Also, I dont know if I need to do my power sterring pump, the reason is because right now when I am driving I have a alot of tension in my steering wheel, and I noticed the pump is very loud when I turn the car to the right and not so much to the left, but even going straight I can hear a slight hum to the pump, If someone can help please, thanks.

Here's the rack:

The pump is here:

I would pick which you think has the worst problem and start there. You may be surprised to see that it fixes both problems. I it doesn't, no big loss. You're just out a little power steering fluid. It's not like you need to discount one to change the other.

Reminder: note the core charge. The core is added to the selling price and refunded once we receive your old, rebuildable core.

You may be chasing a pump problem. Typically, when the racks fail you either have a leak or it is very tight to one side. If it's doing it to both sides, I would begin to suspect the pump. To have uniform failure side to side seems unlikely; not impossible, but unlikely.

A weak pump can cause premature rack failure. So, you don't want let it continue too long. It may be worth a trip to a front end mechanic and pay for them to check it out. Spending a little up front may save some expensive guessing at what the real ailment is.

Do keep us posted. This is good info for other owners.

Do you know what the labor times are on a rack and on a steering pump?

I show the rack at 3.5 hours and pump at 1.5.
