im currently having issues getting the car to start as there is no spark. i can get the engine to turn over if put into neutral. having read many of the 'sticky threads' im lead to believe this could be a faulty cps. ive checked every fuse on the car, and had all connectors apart that are accessible. the battery has pleanty of power and i have added an additional one to ensure sufficient cranking power. motorbikes are more my forte, new to working on cars... any thoughts?
A good Crankshaft position sensor at the very front face of the engine block will read 1300 ohms resistance
The spark power source comes from the same wire color ( between the group of 6 coils ) that will have B + power " sitting " at all times on the coils , the ECU provides a timed ground ( on the other of the 2 wires to make the coils work ( current through the coils ) for a spark ,
For the power to be sitting on the coils there is a fuse X in the right engine bay fuse box , for this fuse to be powered the small relay in the corner of the fuse box must close
To test this relay have ignition key in run but not started , remove this relay and it should click in your finger back to open , rotating the key closes to relay in normal installed configuration
As a new X300 owner never install car battery in backwards , positive post car fwd
Mark with tape and arrow
Never over tighten the positive post bolt , splits curved nut underneith
hi thanks for your response parker7. im sure your pointers will be a good starting point to investigate. ill post my findings when ive had chance to look at it. thanks
3.2 or 4.0 liter as this makes a difference if you have the ZF4HP24 or 22 transmission that have very slightly different starter circuits ( 22 has no transmission mounted rotary position switch )
Your AJ16 engine starts on page 51 of this Jaguar 801s doc link

thankyou for your help with this matter, i now have a spark. swapped the crankshaft sensor as was suggested and it has cured it. 20 quid well spent! not running yet but having drained the 5yr old fuel out of it today, it never stood a chance. im sure with some fresh fuel and a clean of the plugs it will fire up. definiatly heading in the right direction 👍
There is a word of caution on the cheap Crankshaft Position Sensors from reading others very recently , So a grain of salt on relaying on if that is what solved problem for down the road variables of consideration ( well , I just changed the CKPS so it can't be that )
There is a TSB on the best plug and changed gap as cheap copper Champion's
