Default NOT CONT Redux

Hello All,

I am madly trying to address miscellaneous issues before school starts and I am coming back to a persistent irritant that I know others have experienced - the maddening intermittent NOT CONT error message when trying to play CDs from the 6 CD changer in the trunk.

I have read previous posts on this issue and had the dodgy connection mentioned by others in the head unit re-soldered but the problem persists. I removed the CD changer itself and examined it but it seemed clean as a whistle inside. At this point I am considering replacing the CD changer, but I am not confident this is where the issue is.

The CD magazine ejects no problem, so I know there is power to the unit and CDs will continue to play if they have started before the NOT CONT error message pops up so some of the connections are obviously fine. Although not definitive, I suspect a connection between bumps in the round and the error message, so seems like a loose connection somewhere.

I might be able to pick up a unit in Vancouver, but the fellow wants $100 and frankly that seems a little high for an untested unit - especially as I can't be sure that is where the trouble lies. (I can't take the car over as I am helping a friend who is purchasing a truck over there.) I thought I would throw out a request for insights from all you good folk before I commit.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. (And yes, I do want to stay a stock as possible.)

Thanks, as always,

Andrew

I had the same error before, there is a post somewhere you can find, it shows detail pic on what to solder on the headunit unit to fix the problem. the no cont is caused by a cracked soldering joint on the, circuit board. I dont reconmend buying another used, chances are it will have the same problem, thats exactly what happened to me when i bought one from surrey and it worked for amonth, but now i have 2 working headunit.

Just to help others that may search for this topic, here is the original "Not Cont" error thread, with a link to the typical fix:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...t-error-80671/

That being said, the OEM Jaguar Alpine 9500A head units suffer from a myriad of bad "cold solder" joint failures from the factory that show up over time from vibration and hot/cold cycles.

If it were me (and it was) I'd send the Alpine head unit to Southern Electronics and have the whole thing refurbished as just fixing the one suspect surface mount may not have been the only one. Several of us have had SE fix ours and so far they seem to be holding up.

As far as what else may be the problem, you are right that there really is only the head unit, cable and CD changer.

Once you repair the head unit, I don't think the cable is the problem as it is a single direct run from the head unit to CD changer with no junctions in between. So unless the cable is knicked/cut, it shouldn't be your issue.

Now the CD changer itself could be broken, but honestly they are pretty tough. But when they do die, it usually isn't worth fixing as they can be had used or even NOS so cheap and a number of Alpine units are plug & play on the X300.

CHECK YOUR BATTERY LEVEL !!!

Came across the "Not Cont" error after installing a bluetooth module in my car, right after I reassembled everything. I thought something must have pulled loose, broke a solder connection by handling the radio per many threads that point this out, perhaps blew a fuse... I was pretty torqued after all of the work that I had done only to be faced with pulling the entire thing apart again. But, before I did anything else, I noticed that the battery had discharged substantially since I had used accessory power quite a bit as I was checking my installation as I went.

Long story short, low battery voltage was causing the "Not Cont" error. As soon as I put the battery on a charger, the error cleared. Seems kind of obvious in hindsight, but I thought that I'd tag the suggestion onto this thread since it's one of the more recent ones on this issue and it's titled with the error message.
