Default Oil Change - my first for a Jag

Hi Folks -

This is my first of what will be, I'm sure, many posts on this forum. I just bought a BRG 1995 XJ6 with 69K on the clock. To say it looks and drives like new is an understatement.

Anyway, I've done thousands of oil changes (worked at a quick change place in high school)- and next weekend I'd like to do an oil change on my "new" Jag. I did a search on the forum and couldn't find an answer to my question: I have strap wrenches, all sorts of metric sockets, etc, metric allen wrenches - and I just ordered the CD-ROM workshop manual for the car. While I wait for it, I wonder if anyone experienced with this particular model and year could please tell me the exact size and tool I will need to remove the drain plug?

I ask, as to not get the car up on the ramps and jackstands, only to find I have every tool but the correct one - I'm sure we've all been there. Getting to the oil filter looks a bit delicate, with all the FI wires in the way. Also, is a 2995 filter the right size? And 8.5 quarts is the correct amount of lubricant? Looks like the dealerused 5w-30 and 10w-30 in the past, judging from receipts. Manual suggests 10w-30 as the standard, and is what I will use- I don't wish toinitiate oil debates, merely to find if the manual's suggestion re: grade is the best one.

Thanks in advance! (Also, are there other Jag forums besides this one?)

Greetings duff,

You're not the bass player fron Gunz 'n Roses / Velvet Revolver ,are you?

You need a nice big 30 MM combination wrench. You can just but one with a box end for this job, but there are other fasteners this size on the car so I'd go for a combination wrench.

The strap wrench will work, I've read that some people get to the filter from above but that is a waste of time.

I'd have to look at the chart in the Vehicle Care Manual, but I think 5W30 is too thin for XJ6. I use 10W40, and 20W50 on high mileage six cylinders unles the climate temperature is likely to be under 40F. Colder than that, and 20W 50 starts turning to molasses.

Enjoy your car, that is about the best Jag you could have selected for overall reliability. The performance gains available in other models are not without a trade-off in cost, both up front and after the fact.

Thanks Jagtech!

So how does this combi wrench look to you:

I'll give 10w-30 a shot. Car has 69K. Babied car. Glad to know I got the reliable one - I did my research and it sure did seem bullet proof!

So 8.5 quarts, right?

I normally put 8 in it. But Start there and if looks a little low, add the other half.
