My old jaguar x300 had a built in car phone and antenna on the back quarter window ,trying to find a black antenna and a retro car phone to fit my current car ,mainly the antenna but can’t find one anywhere and it’s driving me nuts !!!

literally every period bmw and most jags had an antenna ,motorolla I think ,but now can’t find one for love nor money 🤦‍♂️

help ?!?

 

If you are referring to the wire antennae style in the picture, they are all over the internet for as low as $5 U.S. Likely though if you go to your local breaker they may have one sitting on a vehicle about to be crushed that could be acquired for a small pittance (or perhaps in consideration of a few pints) But if my memory serves me correctly the X300 antennae is in the rear window. with the defroster grid.

It’s a fake antenna ,I wanted a real one so I’ll have to keep looking

 

You might want to check and see if it is a old analog phone that you desire. Your phone bill will be astronomical.

I don’t want it to actually work just be capable of working ,if I get a fake antenna may as well start fitting fake bonnet scoops etc

 

When I bought my car (1995 XJR) it had an original Jaguar option car phone. I have removed all of it, except the antenna, which is shown in the photo. As you can see, its on the rear window, rather than on the rear 1/4 light as you asked for in you initial post. I didn't take the antenna off, as at the time I wasn't sure if there was a hole in the glass, as far as I know, there isn't.

I've kept everything I removed, which includes: phone hand set, centre console lid with recess for phone (in black), sub-harness, phone module that fits in boot (under the parcel shelf).

I can take photos of all the above if you're interested.

 

Antenna for the phone was originally mounted next to the fuel flap on the rear wing. Sold mine couple of years ago, fully working and of course the moment I did I wished I never sold it

This is on my old sport but had on my LWB too.




Phone worked no problems but not with all mobile providers, o2 definitely worked fine and I've used it for a few years. Handsfree too with factory radio. Mic was over the driver doors.

If memory serves correctly, "first generation" carphones had wing mounted antennae, but they migrated fairly quickly to through glass aerials like the one the Black Munk has shown. There is no hole in the glass, and once removed you can see that the on-glass transfer for the heated window etc has a space where the phone aerial is intended to be mounted. The on-glass transfer also has an aerial for the remote key fob.
I first owned my car when it was new, and the carphone aerial was the stubby one shown by the Black Munk. I removed it at the earliest opportunity, as it whistled annoyingly at motorway speed, but there is no doubt that it looked cool!

 

I should have checked before I sent the reply above... The phone module isn't with my other Jaguar parts, but I don't remember throwing it away, there are a couple of other places I can look. Also looking at the phone handset, it may well have been upgraded at some point, as it has what looks like a wooden spacer block wrapped in electrical tape. The harness is the Jaguar part, but I've cut it to get the last bit out from the centre console, it could be spliced together again. So in addition to the antenna, still on the car, this is what I have:

ive now got a fully working car phone in my 90s yuppy mobile 🤣

wiring was all there just had to find it all and I’ve even found the correct module on eBay for a tenner to plug in the boot 😍

 

The car itself is a conversation piece, but the car phone now in it is really entertaining! A real novelty. Especially because it is working. A handset like that would be much better to grip than a cell phone. But hands free, that was high tech. If I had one I'd pretend to use it even if it didn't work. Which brings the question, could this setup still work on the American cell networks? Hmmm.

It must have been an expensive option from the dealer as new. Nice work, exec!

 

It has hands free and yes if you find a 97 model car phone I believe they are all SIM card phones not analogue ,not sure about the earlier ones however ,thanks to the black munk for sorting me out with the parts ,he’s a genius 👌🏻

 

In UK these phones were(as far as I'm aware) all working within 900Mhz band only and only one of all our main providers(o2) was still using it when I had my phone working a few years back, don't think this band is used at all in US so to get it working you'd need to make sure that phone(and its supported bands) that you get in US is supported by whatever provider you use.
Its not as simple as 'sim' or 'analogue'.

 

But it is as simple as digital and analogue,a digital mobile/car phone will still work on modern systems as it uses the same technology !

I know people who still use 90s flip phones now in the U.K.
