Is it possible? '95 4.0 to '95 6.0 swap?
Question for the pros here on Jaguarforums...
I would like to put a straight 6 4.0 motor from a 95 XJ6 into a 95 XJS V12 car.
Knowing that I need to at least compare transmission numbers just to get started.
Here is my situation, there is a '95 XJS V12 2+2 Convertible I can pickup on the cheap,
It is not running and I could care less for the V12.
Body and interior are in serviceable condition and the electronics work.
I also have available a 95 XJS 4.0 straight 6 that needs a transmission.
Motor works fine, but the body is poor and interior is junk.
Here is your question.... Are the motor mounts in the same location? or will there need to be
modifications to make it work?
The '95 XJS V12 is 1 of 78 that year and and they only made 2 in '96 and quit the series.
I drive a '95 Vanden Plas and love the straight 6.
If I could turn this convertible into a straight 6 my wife unit would love it.
My brain electrons would like your opinions and thoughts.
Is it possible or am I throwing money at a lost cause?
thanks in advance

If you have both cars, it's certainly possible. Off the top of my head the differences are:
Motor mounts
gearbox mounts
driveshaft
radiator
cooling fans
transmission
shift cable
braking system ( depends on VIN)
fuel tank
fuel pumps
transmission ECU
Engine ECU
wiring harness
shifter and electronics in the shifter.
The V12's are very nice, personally I'd fix the V12.

Isn't it ironic how the AJ16 will run forever as the car around it crumbles. While at the same time a very nice example of a V12 powered car has engine issues that sends most observers running away! Sadly, there have been many examples of the XJ8/XK8 from the dark days where a gorgeous car is woefully disabled due to a serious problem like a timing chain slip or ZF5 transmission failure.
Like most engines, if the V12 is never overheated, 99% of the time troubles can be overcome that do not involve replacing an engine. It will take the right person with the know-how and desire (be it an amateur or a mechanic). It could take a lot of cash too, but that's why we are here on these forums. To figure it out for ourselves using all these resources. So many more of these cars continue on the road because someone cares about them. I'm glad to see the XJS V12 owner giving it one more go. That car is incredibly special and rare. It deserves a future.
