Default Transmission swap possible?

I have a bad tranny in my 02 X type 3.0(last six of VIN are C33276) and was thinking about getting a used one to replace it. I am looking at a 2004 tranny out of an X type. Anyone know if they will fit in my 02? I have been told the weak trannys were fixed in 04, is it true?

I am mechanically inclined. Anyone ever done a swap on this car? Any special tools or knowledge outside the ordinary I should know?

Possibly that you posted basically the same question on two threads...

But, I'll go out on a limb and say yes, that all the 3.0L autos are interchangeable..However, I think maybe thereare some software issues to tend with as well..not sure of that either..Maybe a direct swap no problemo.

No problem...So what you gonna do?..Can you call a few independant JAG/Import fixitshops in your area and get a feel from them?

Maybe this is all your problem is..Maybe AAMCO can do this for you..

courtesy of WildBill:

This is from another forum. I trust the source but cannot vouch for this information personally. Having said that, here is what someone else did with a similar problem.

"it was
revving to 4000 RPM when she was going about 30 MPH. I drove the
car and found that it would shift gently into 4th gear and then
slip if you gave it any power. After a few weeks researching this
and a $8000 quote to fix (over the phone) from the Jaguar dealer. I
found that there is a common failure of a piston that cracks and I
was fairly sure this was my problem....To make a long story short,
I fixed the car in about 4 hours without removing the transmission
from the car. If anyone has a similar problem and would like to
know the steps to fix it, plese post a reply and I will respond."

...there's a cover on the left end of the transmission that
can be removed while the transmission is in the car. I had to
remove the battery and the brackets that hold the battery (this was
mostly to make things easier, probably not really necessary), the
lower plastic cover under the front bumper (not hard, just about 25
screws). I removed the left front tire and took the two front bolts
out of the sub-frame that holds the suspension, steering, etc out.
This let it drop a couple of inches down. Then jacked up the motor
for support and removed the large bolt on the left motor/trans
mount near the left shock tower and the round upper bar going to
the motor from here - two 13mm bolts. Then I lowered the engine
just an inch or two and this allowed me to get right at the cover
behind the left wheel well. It has about 13 or so 12mm bolts and
two 14mm ones with o-rings. The whole cover is under spring
pressure for a way so I removed the bolts evenly to keep it all
strait. Once, you remove this cover, the drum housing the faulty
cylinder is right there, just pull it off. It contains the reverse
clutches and the direct clutches. Remove the two rings that hold
the clutches in and take them out. You have to depress the center
cylinder and remove a retainer ring to get the pistons out. The
large aluminum drum is the one that cracks and it's almost
impossible to see - very very small crack. Depending on how much
the car was driven you may have to replace all the clutches in the
reverse stack - since the piston won't allow any pressure on the
direct clutches I'd be surprised if they would need to be replaced.
Assembly was easy and it all went together easily, you just use
silicone (very sparingly) for the gasket as was original. Then
Refill and check the fluid - which is a little tricky but not that
hard. I used the Castrol Import Multi Vehicle transmission fluid -
$3.99 / quart and used about 8.5. This meets the Shell spec. for
this transmission, I've heard the fluid $40 / quart from the
dealer - ouch! It' really not bad if you go slow and keep
everything as clean as you can. I purchased the JATCO JF506E
rebuild manual from ATRA (I think it was $25, but didn't really use
it except for reference/pictures) and I have the Jaguar JTIS which
helped too but the pictures are vague. I hope this helps someone
out, I really love this car and there doesn't seem to be too many
problems in the 2002's but was a little worried how much this would
cost to fix - total $210 including fluid - I also replaced the
thrust washer that is between the cover that you remove and the
drum, it was a little worn looking. Good luck. I may sit down and
write step-by-step with pictures and details in the future."

Default RE: Transmission swap possible?

I saw that, trying to find out where to get that manual and a parts supplier. Anyone know where?

I talked to AAMCO and he said the Min to work on it would be $1900. I figured they will try to get close to $3k out of me. Not sure if I want to go down that road.

I think I may try the self help solution first, I can afford to waste 2 to 3 hundred for a quick look and possible fix. I just need the time to do it.

Only other solution is to sell the car and get something else!

Default Trans swap progress

The swap was straightforward. Trans shifted good but lost speedometor. Naturally cruise and all other speed controlled components were gone also. Abs is also showing codes. Tried buying a later model TCM to swap out but they come with a 2 plug configuration instead of one. Went to boneyard and picked up the 2 plug section of harness thinking i would just soldier it in and be good to go. Found out not so easy as the wires use the same color codes over and over. You know like 5 greens and 4 oranges etc. Dont want to burn up anything. JTIS book shows pin out config for the old style tcm but not the new. For the new style it shows the pins in a straight line instead of in the three rows each plug has. At this point I am not sure where to go with it next. I will call dealer tomorrow to see if they can reprogram old TCM to new motor and trans numbers. I doubt they will help me. I think if JTIS went newer than 2004 it would have info I need but i have been unable to locate anything newer.Worst case senario is I will o/haul my old trans and reinstall it. I will keep updating this when I get more info. For now the car sits in my shop. Not sure if driving it will damage the trans even though it shifts fine)

xkecoupe, did you have to do anything special after reinstalling the used transmission? Right now I'm putting a used one in mine and we can crank the engine by hand with a large bar but once we put two bolts into the torque converter we can't crank it anymore. Did you have to do something special to get the transmission/torque converter to turn? I suppose we might need to take the tranny back out and check it over but any ideas you have would be spectacular.

Edit: We fixed this issue, it looks like the starter was catching on the flywheel somehow. Best of luck on the transmission fix. I swapped a 2003 transmission into my 2002 and not surprisingly it worked no problem. All functions work, speedometer, etc. Hopefully you can figure out the wiring issues.

I know this is a very old thread, but has anyone else tried to fix their shifting problems with the trans in the car?
