Default Production Numbers - Year by Year Breakdown

Wikipedia breaks down the production by models but not year. This information used to be on Xclusively Jaguar, but it was lost in their website re-design.

I found an old post on here, where someone had copied the Xclusively Jaguar numbers, but it's not well formatted.

To while away a few hours, I made a spreadsheet. The link can be found at www.thejpster.org.uk. I thought I should record it here for posterity.

Thanks JPster, nice work!

Thanks also for the list of Reader's Digest Condensed Books. My parents passed along to me the love of reading good stories and I grew up in a house full of RDCBs. My mom still has them all.

Cheers,

Don

So according to this, I have a 97 xj300 4.0 LWB and there were only 46 built? I guess I will keep it

It's like my Sovereign 3.2 LWB. If you're paying for the leather and toys, you can probably afford the engine upgrade too. Likewise, if you have to scrimp on the trim, you probably can't.

I couldn't give the damned things away so figured I might as well do something useful and catalog them. I think Wikipedia has a list of the US volumes, but I couldn't find any record on the UK ones.

I've now revised my numbers slightly.

In our Nigel Thorley's wonderful book "All The Cars", he breaks down production numbers for all the variants. It's always bothered me that the XJ12 was listed twice - once as XJ12 and once as "Sovereign XJ12*", where the * indicated 'Overseas models', yet none of the other variants received that distinction. The labels for each model, and the totals, match my numbers, taken from Xclusively Jaguar.

My numbers are interesting, because they show the vehicles marked by Nigel as 'Overseas' were sold in SWB form in 1996 and 1997, while the 'normal' XJ12 numbers show a definite switch from SWB only to LWB only sometime in calendar year 1995 and show nothing sold at all in calendar year 1997. This is odd, because the legal paperwork filed by the EPA regarding the V12 ECU's non-compliance with the OBD-II standard, states that Jaguar sold 520 MY95 XJ12s in North America, 509 MY96 XJ12s, and no MY97 cars because their non-compliance exemption had expired. Those numbers are much larger than the ones quoted for the 'Overseas model' but around 30-odd short of the numbers quoted for the "standard" XJ12.

So, I can only conclude that the asterisk in the book is on the wrong XJ12. I think it actually makes more sense this way around too. A "Sovereign XJ12" is a Sovereign trim vehicle with a V12 in it, while an "XJ12" is actually a DD6 substitute. It still bothers me that Jaguar's internal VIN documentation doesn't make this distinction, when their build data does, but hey ho. I'm guessing the discrepancy between the production numbers and the EPA numbers is made up of pre-production prototypes, and/or perhaps sales in Canada.

Anyway, if I'm right, then the XJ12 LWB is incredibly rare outside the US. I guess that's because everyone with that kind of money just bought the Daimler? So, if you see one, buy it. If for no other reason than the fact that I might, and I really shouldn't.

Thanks! I've been looking for a source of the magic "196" for my '96 XJ12 (NAS) and I was wondering if it included those sold in the US or overseas as well.

Thanks again,
Nick
