Radio buttons not working '96 XJ6
Hiya
I have a 1996 XJ6 3.2 Executive and the Main On/Off/Volume button on the original Radio/Tape/CD Changer(in boot) does not allow me to turn off the radio or adjust volume neither can I change to Tape or CD or change radio station ?
The radio remains on and nothing else. I know a few of you have had similar issues, I've tried jiggling the buttons, but still nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks

Spray some penetrating oil in the VR501 on / off switch as you have it removed and pointing up . Listen for a click as push the knob . Vertical car encoder switch is the name , Part # EN146712D01 is the pic below . Does not show both left and right volume potentiometers but is has the correct number of taps as the original . Knob shaft different . Original shaft diameter 4.825 mm , and 17 mm tall . Base is the same in the pic with 12.7 mm x 12 mm sides

Should you use penetrating oil or electrical contact cleaner in the switch? I have 2 XJ6s with non operational head units. I am pulling one from my parts car and am going to go through it, looking for bad solder joints and cleaning all the buttons and switches to see if I can get at least one operational. I would like to keep the original radio for looks and they don't sound too bad when they are working. I have the premium system on both cars.

You can turn it off by pulling the fuse. Sorry, don't remember which one nor in which fusebox. It MAY come back on when you reseat the fuse, but most likely will stay off until you turn it back on with the knob....at which point it won't go off again....if it does come on. Not much help, but as I used to use a cassette adapter for phone audio, I found when mine was playing up like that, pushing in the tape would work, and for some reason, with the tape adapter in and working (still no volume control, mind you) Popping the off button would pop out the tape and turn the head off. THen it would be fine for awhile until it wasn't.

Best of luck with the X300 radios.
In my several years of X300 ownership I'm sure I swapped radios at least 7-8 times. I bought several used units to keep on hand including two (supposedly) 'reconditioned' units. Plus, I sent one out for professional repair at the (apparently just one) radio shop in the USA still qualified to work on them. After 4 attempts they refunded my money.
All of them failed in one way or the other....most commonly, but not exclusively, inability to operate the CD player.
Cheers

Here is one of the definitive threads on the OEM radio problems, including the link to the "CD not connected" error:

I sent my radio to Southern Electronics, and "knock on wood" it is still working fine after 2+ years.

I bought a very clean and tidy unit from a professional repair shop a while ago. Worked fine for a while but the CD player only worked intermittently. After discussing with the shop, they suspected that the "new" radio unit and the CD player were not a good match. Eventually we agreed to return the bought unit for a full refund and send my original radio for repair instead. My radio unit has been fully refurbished (on/off button, light bulbs, leaking LCD display panel replaced). It now works like a champ. Hope it will last.
