Default Remote fobs won't program. Is it the car?

I've reprogrammed my old remote successfully a few times over the years without problems so when it stopped working I thought it would be easy to achieve again. But it wasn't and no matter how many times I tried it would not reprogramme. Another remote I had as a standby also wouldn't programme.
I have just bought another one from an auction site and this one won't programme either!
I'm now thinking that it may not be the remote fobs at fault but perhaps the receiver unit or something else in the car.
I have tried disconnecting/re-connecting the car battery to see if this will re-set things but nothing I have tried has worked.
Assuming now that it's not the fob at fault, does anyone have any other ideas please?
Thanks in advance.

What frequency are the remotes? If I'm correct, I believe the U.S. versions are 433mhz and UK is 415mhz....correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for that. All the 3 remotes including the one that used to work are 433, The car was US registered so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. Something sure is though!
Thanks again.
