Hi. I think I just lost my only key to my 1997 XJ6. Although we are still looking and hoping to find it, how and or what do I need to obtain a new key economically? Thanks much!

 

That might be an issue as any new key needs to be programmed to suit your car and to do this, you need a working key, which has to be "read" by the main dealer in order for it to be cloned in effect. I went this route last year when I got a spare made up. Cost around €100 in total.

Having said that, when I renewed my insurance I included a separate cover for just €20 euro for key replacement, locksmith call out if they're locked in the car etc. Don't know how they replace them without an original, but must ask!!

 

I thought the dealer could order a new key if you had the key codes supplied with the vehicle when new.

 

US specification keys do not contain a security chip and do not need to be programmed to the Security and Locking Control module.
The dealer should be able to order a key using the VIN number of the car.
