Default replacing fender emblem 94 XJ6

Hi, I was going to replace my right front fender emblem, I have the new part but the chrome is still on the fender, all I need is the leaper replaced, so my question is how to remove the chrome piece from my fender and replace the new emblem or can I remove the black/gold leaper from the chrome inset and if so how to do this? Thanks in advance

The whole emblem should pop off fender. I've used a little heat from a heat gun on low or a hair dryer, tape on fender to protect paint while carefully prying with a wide prying tool. Careful not to micro dent metal fender. I've had paint pull off under emblem so be careful.

I've seen where heat and fishing line were used to cut emblem off.

Cleaning adhesive residue from the paint is critical in order to get good adhesion of the new emblem. I've used a 3M eraser wheel attached to a drill and finished up with a goof off like solvent. You can use solvent only for residue removal in a small area just be careful to only use on immediate area as it can remove clear coat and soften paint/change finish.

As RFXJ12 referenced, a length of fishing line or music wire (a guitar B or E string) works great and reduces the risk of damaging the surrounding paint, though applying tape around the emblem is still a good idea not only to protect the paint but to help you get the new emblem in the right spot.

Wrap the fishing line or music wire around your index fingers of both hands with about 12 inches in-between, and use it like a cheese cutter to saw through the double-sided tape or adhesive on the backside of the leaper emblem. I haven't found heat to be necessary when using this method.

Depending on how hard the residual tape or adhesive may be, low heat and 3M Adhesive Remover will help get it off. If you use a heat gun, keep it on a low setting as RFXJ12 says, or you can cause the paint to blister.

Cheers,

Don
