She is dead
hi guys n gals well finally the gearbox has died completely. Driving along at steady pace when the gearbox dropped a couple of cogs, revs went through the roof and then stopped all drive to the road. managed to free wheel into a car park which was a bit hairy at 60 mph but no crashing ensued so alls fine apart from a car that now has no means of putting the power to the road. What would be the best box to put in as a replacment ? 95 xjr6 auto.
Oh and any idea on the cost of these things as i have a feeling its going to be a telephone numbers price

Before you get too depressed wait for an XJ guy to reply.
If I've got the right transmission for your car it could be an 'A' drum failure, a notorious problem.

If it is, and the bits haven't chewed up the rest of the transmission, it's a DIY-possible job.

Ouch!
Strip, diagnose and refurbish or go straight for a replacement?
If you're thinking of going for a used replacement, you're about 10 miles from Jaguar Spares North East in Peterlee and 30 miles from Eurojag in Darlington. Next is JustJags UK in Walsall.

Right, it'll have GM's 4L80E transmission.
No such thing as an inexpensive automatic transmission overhaul, I reckon, but at least there's nothing exotic about the 4L80E. It's plain as mud by modern standards and used on some other Brit cars as well.
I'm guessing $1800-2000 all-in for a typical overhaul here in the 'States.
Find a decent trans shop who will first check to make sure it isn't an electrical issue before tearing the box apart.
Cheers

Cheers chaps. Plugged it in and no electrical faults show up so box is off. Got another one enroute to fit today so we will strip, overhaul/strengthen the old one ready for the next calamity. Cheers for the advice peeps :-)
