Default Shifting console locked into 2nd, suggestions?

Was out for a lovely Sunday drive and was on a particularly steep grade when I shifted the car from drive to 3rd to 2nd. Car slowed while I was breaking then seemed to shift without me moving on the gear select. Locked into second and was unable to move it out. Suggestions? Currently waiting for a tow home, will have more information when I am stationary and can get to my tools...which are locked in the trunk.

Edit - Now with photos. The shifting column when I did get the panel off had this white plastic piece not attached. I cannot move the silver/white piece very much, I am thinking it may be a jammed or broken linkage somewhere. I was recently rearended and am thinking that may have had something to do with it.

Across from the Park detent there is a overide screw that may give more information in tinkering

Thanks LadyP, I'll get on it tomorrow. too dark tonight to try and get anything else done. Will start from the detent and work my way up from there. Edit - I was able to manually put it back in park. Will work my way up like I said and see if I can get anywhere tomorrow.

The crash switch does not always reset so a paper clip jumpering the 2 white wire works

See page 40

"Gee, I wish they had taught us how to read wiring diagrams in highschool..." Thanks again Lady P. Will check over mechanical bits in the morning, go through to make sure linkages aren't jammed and work on resetting that switch.

So I cleaned everything up, reassembled all the gubbins and realized that a part of the center plastic disk for the gate had shattered off. I cleaned up the loose edges and need to go back and lube every thing but it seems to be working fine now, actually shifting easier than it had before. So will source that part on the gate and get things sorted. Thanks for the diagram and help Lady P, if you ever find yourself in Colorado stop by for a beer!
