Anthea - that switch down at the shifter normally has a pretty stiff detent to it, so unless it's broken (as mine is) it should stay put.
Mine, being broken slides easily and will go back and forth.
If you try to remove the leather padded trim around the shifter for a look, be careful about those plastic tabs (on the chrome-plated plastic piece).

My car has a rocker switch for sport/normal. There are two wires on the switch, one is ground and one goes to the transmission control module. When sport is selected the switch is closed and a ground from one wire is applied to the other wire. Maybe your switch is faulty, maybe a wire is chafed through and is grounding? You could disconnect the switch and cover the ends of the wires and see if it stays in normal mode. If it no longer goes into sport then the switch is faulty.
