Default Steering Column issue

I just bought a 1996 Vanden Plas. The power steering column operates in the "telescope" mode but the tilt feature does not work. Any suggestions?

Mine does just the opposite. Between the tow of us, we might be able to get the wheel in just the right spot.

When you want to use the "tilt" adjustment do you hear a motor hum? If you do, but the wheel doesn't adjust, the drive cable for the adjuster is probably broken. Common failure.

You can get a new or used motor & cable assembly. Or, some vendors have been able to source individual cables.....much less expensive, obviously, than buying the motor-cable assembly. Try Coventry West 800 331 2193

The telescope adjustment has it's own motor & cable. Of the two, one is easy to replace and the other....not so much. I always forget if it's the tilt or telescope that's the stinker.

Others will chime in.

Cheers

The tilt motor is the easy one since you don't have to drop the column and it's clearly accessible from beneath. The telescope motor has to be addressed from above, therefore you need to drop the column, which isn't all that difficult. You just have to be careful not to overtighten the 2 allen bolts holding the column when reassembling, or it'll bind and the tilt will operate very slowly, or not at all.

The drive cables can be purchased separately for about $50. Alternatively, if your comfortable with a grinder or dremel, you can purchase a 1/4" flex shaft for gas rc boats at a hobby shop and cut it to proper length. Those flex shafts are the right size, but MUCH stronger since they're designed for use in hi-torque hi-rpm racing applications. They run a very cheap $8-12. Also, most weed whackers us the same 1/4" size shaft. The repair shops usually just throw them away when they do rebuilds. If you stopped by a shop & asked them about it, they'd likely just give you one, or at worst charge you a couple bucks.

Reach Motor Driveshaft - Motorcars LTD
