Default Steering column issue

So, today, out of the blue, as these things tend to arise, my steering column stopped adjusting outwards. It still tilts up and down, automatically or otherwise, but the "in and out" movement has ceased. I can hear the motor running, accompanied by a sort of grating/clicking noise, as though teeth or cogs on some component aren't properly engaging.

Any thoughts on where (and how) to start looking? I do have a donor car with fully functioning column, so a swap is possible as opposed to a repair.

Any pointers or thoughts much appreciated.

There have been many threads relating to the repair of XJ columns. A search should take care of it.

There are 2 adjustments to the column. (tilt and reach)
The columns are almost identical from 1995 to 2003 sedans.(X300/X308)
As RJ237 states, do a search for sedan column reach motor fault.
