Stuck in reverse
Hey this is my first post but i looked through the forums before i made it. I pulled into a parking space, put car in park then went to leave and put it in reverse and it wont come out of reverse. the shift knob had a hard time moving along the tree. it will go into 2-4 on the left and up to R, but wont go all the way up the right. It was sitting for a couple months and i had to buy a new battery for it (Duralast), got it in took it to my wifes work to pick her up, and the shifter kept slipping out of D into N. i had to hold it in D to keep driving. got to her work and it got stuck. I couldnt take the key out so i ditached the battery and but the e brake on. looked through the forums and saw the selector bracket bolt fix, looked under car and they were still in there, tight. took the star key shaped thing off the shifter face and depressed it down with my key and wiggled the knob back in forth trying to get it to pop back in but nothing, The brake lights work when i hit them, i saw someone say something about the gear box being unable to read a stop or park if the lights dont work.
also i have a ticking noise thats been going on since before this started. i think its a loose timing chain tensioner. im just giving as much info as i can, maybe it makes a diffrence somewhere. its a 99 xjr with about 107000 miles on it. i called 2 garages in town and niether would work on it, and its in my wifes works parking lot and i got to fix it soon.
