Smile Ultragauge scan tool

I just bought the Ultragauge Scan Tool mainly for my 2000 XK8. It works great. Would like to try it on my 95 XJ6 (X300). Before I do I thought I would ask if anyone has any experience doing this on the 1995 model car. I know the commonality between all cars with the OBDII system was started in 1996. But since the 95, 96 and 97 are essentially identical could Jaguar have been smart enough to make the OBDII system common in 95 also? I don't want to screw up the car by trying the scan tool on it if it will have an adverse effect.

Any help appreciated.

95 is also obd2, in the us on a state inspection machine it doesnt recognise it as such. You have to tell the machine its a 96. For once jaguar brought soemthing to market early

Brutal,
I take this to mean that I can buy an obd2 reader for my 1995 XJ6 and have it work despite the fact that a 1995 is pre-odb2. I would just need to tell the machine it's a 1996? If so, that's a relief. Haven't bought a reader yet.

You shouldnt have to tell a scan tool its a 96. If its obd2 itll read which a 95 is, its only pre u.s. Requirment. Us said all 96 and later. Jaguar said we coming out with a new model in 95, we will just make it obd2. I was reffering to many state inspection machines. If you type in 95 model yr it switches you to a dyno chassis test for emmisssions and not obd2. The dyno test is much longer, so you have to ahem "lie" to the state machine. Is that clearer

Yes, clearer.

Do you have a code reader manufacturer recommendation?

Lots of choices. I use an Innova 3130....it's fine for DIY troubleshooting/diag/code reading. Covers all the basics, has live data stream and freeze frame.

Cheers

there are many choices. I use a Mac Tools scanner I spent $125 on. it does codes, does many manufacturer specific codes and can see live date and monitors too. the scan gauge is nice too because not only does it show codes and actual temps, psi etc that the ecu sees, it clear codes on the fly. read around here a decide what best fits for you.

Thanks, Doug and Brutal, I'll research those mentioned.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll give my ultragauge a try on the XJ6. I like the Ultragauge because it is small and I plan to mount it in the XK8 and monitor certain things on trips. Things like coolant tempt and some others. The coolant temp gauge on these cars has a large dead band where the gauge reads centered but the tempt range can be from 180 to 230 F. I don't like that. Some later XJs are that way also. Also I like seeing what's going on with the engine. It is an educational experience. I guess my old flight test back ground is showing.

Hooked up ultragauge to the 95 XJ6 and it worked. Sorta. Found 9141 protocol. Same as the XK8. And, it has improved the instand mpg drastically. I am now getting over four thousand mpg. Isn't that wonderful. Gasoline is almost flowing back into the tank. The XJ6 must not have a fuel flow measurement as that is also reading almost zero. Any ideas as to how the car computes mpg/gph? It is also running around 200 to 205 on coolant. That might be normal. I'll check that again on a really hot day.

Any ideas on the mileage measurement. I would like to get that working so I can calibrate it.

Thanks guys.
