I don't know a lot about transmissions, but that sounds bad! It makes me think possible bad clutch plates? Hopefully someone who knows about the X300 transmission will be able to help.

Here's a proper link to the video:

That is a strange sound, damotron, and I haven't heard it before.

First of all, have you checked for any stored diagnostic trouble codes? Here is a link to the DTC Summaries Guide:

Jaguar AJ16 ZF 4HP24 DTC Summaries Guide

Also, here's a link to the service manual, which includes a section on fault diagnosis:

Jaguar ZF Transmission Service Manual

The noise sounds like something rubbing or perhaps a pump working against some kind of resistance. If a clutch has failed, the oil filter could be clogged with friction material.

One quick check would be to look for signs of transmission fluid leaking from the bottom of the bellhousing (remove the plastic grate if necessary).

Another test might be to disconnect the cooler lines at the radiator or gearbox and use compressed air to check for free flow through the cooler (which is part of the radiator assembly). Then run the engine briefly to confirm that fluid is ejected from one of the lines (the other line is the return and it has no pressure on its own). If you disconnect the lines at the radiator you can aim them into a catch container to reduce the mess of this test. If the fluid flow is weak, there may be an obstruction somewhere, such as in the oil filter, or a sticking valve.

You could drain the fluid to check for signs of friction material. If none is found, the next step would probably be to consult with a ZF transmission specialist. The problem could be in the valve body or gearbox, but it will probably take an expert to track it down.

Hopefully someone else has had experience with that noise and can give you better guidance.

Cheers,

Don

Good advice from Don but if this was my car I would take a different approach.

Firstly you need to confirm 100% that the noise is from the Transmission. Take it somewhere with a 4 post ramp, get the car in the air and get underneath it to listen carefully with a stethoscope or a screwdriver pretending to be one.

If the noise is definitely from the transmission then I think nothing short of removal is going to get you very far. My guess is it's the torque converter as the frequency of the noise seems directly linked to engine speed.

In the UK a used transmission and torque converter is about 150GBP - there's no demand for them as they are (usually!) bulletproof. It's likely that any strip down, diagnosis and rebuild by a specialist would be much more. So I would just bite the bullet, save some time and effort and just replace it (It would be worth confirming no obstruction in cooler/pipes first as Don suggested).

Used parts where you are may be more expensive so this may not apply to you.

hi guysthanks for advice how do you get the cooler lines off radiator I tried and they are so tight its not funny.
keep thinking I'm going to snap out if put any more pressure on it.

it makes the noise when putting into any gear on the spot. and a little noise when it changes gear itself in drive other then that when I am just cruising along it doesn't make the noise.

the noise is definitely coming from bell housing area but seems more like top of bell housing area. hasn't leaked any fluid anywhere.

I was driving along the other day see if could get it to make noise at speed and all of a sudden it started that noise at 100km/h and it was doing the noise very fast so yeah I guess torque convertor also its weird though as it hardly does it while driving it.
