Welcome to the forum, Waward. I see you've posted this problem both here, in the X300 forum, as well as over in the X-Type forum.
Firstly, let me direct you to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum forum to make an introduction and receive a proper welcome aboard. It would be a good idea to announce what year/model your Jag is in your intro as well as add that information to your public profile and your signature.
Moving on, I confess I don't know beans about the X-Type, but can assure you no display screen in any unmodified X300 could ever impair your ability to adjust temp or fan speed on the climate control.
Neither of my S-Types have the NavSystem fitted, but both have relatively large central screens that report climate control information and are prone to go blank on occasion. A slight tap or swipe of a finger on the screen usually restores them. However, even if blank, the buttons and knobs for controlling temperature and fan speed are still functional.
So my guess is you have a Nav system fitted and the climate controls are executed by "soft-keys" on the screen. As I said before, the best, quickest method to finding a solution would be to make an intro post in the new members area where a Moderator could take notice and bestow full membership benefits upon completion of the necessary pre-requisites as well as other wise members can direct you to the proper sub-model forum for your specific car, where SOMEONE has no-doubt experienced and mended the same problem and can help you out.

Hi waward,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!
If you will please post the year, model and engine of your Jaguar I will consolidate both of your threads into one in the correct forum.
Also, as aholbro1 advised, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.
Cheers,
Don
