what do i have ?
The AJ16 engine (yours) has 2 double row timing chains, one upper, one lower.
It has 2 hydraulic tensioners, one on the RH side of the cylinder head, and well documented as a cause of rattling noises. The second is inside the timing cover, and not documented as an issue of any sort.
There are blades and guides on both chains with a rubberised coating, that wears out.
There is a 3rd chain (single row) that drives the oil pump, but is not related to "timing".
These engines/chains/tensioners are NOT related to the timing chain tensioner issues of the V8 engines in the next model car.
I hope that clears that issue up for you.

Thanks, you guys are the greatest,i am glad to know this engine is one of the best of the lot, Satterfield note; with 101k on it, I have all records, should last a good while.
HAHA, 110K miles, JUST RUN IN.
One of my V12's is at 505000kms, and untouched, and yes it has issues (leaks oil), but still runs on all 12, so the care factor is very low.
Good clean oil at regular intervals will see that top 300K miles without too musch fuss.

just curious about the timing chain issue on the v8, does it affect the XK8 and XKR aswell? was it ever fixed? i want to get an xk8 or xkr, what would be the best year to get it between 97 and 2005? how about a year 2000 XKR does it suffer from this problem or any other mayor one>?

The problem was only finally fixed with the introduction of the 'third generation' aluminium bodied upper tensioner in February 2005. The recommendation is to use this type when replacing early tensioners.
