Where can I get my codes scanned?
Hello all,
I just got back from my Canadian Tire and was told that they couldnt scan my car because they don't have a scanner equipped to work on Jags.
Is there a particular place I should go or am I best just buying myself one? If that's the case, where do I find a store that carries them?
I'm just about to replace the plugs in my car and I would like to know if there's a particular cylinder giving me the misfiring issue.
Regards,
Mike

Of course, I was not there and do not know what scanner the fellow had, but any but the most basic scanners will read ISO 9141, which is what the X-300 OBD uses for communication protocal. There might also be some confusion in that MY '95 cars were not required to hace OBDII standard interface. The MY 95 X300 does have it, though. If there is confusion, just tell the scanner it is a MY 96.
Or the guy may just be a lazy so and so. mTry another store or a different shift at his store.

any scanner works
the person @canadian tire was just being lazy, but anyways they charge something ridiculous like $120 to read a code
just buy a code reader... its a good investment.. anywhere you go is gonna charge you

Does the X300 Jaguar's OBDII system report which cylinder has a missfire? I've had a missfire but I'm not sure I ever found out which cylinder it was. That was with Autoenginuity. I may be wrong, but I didn't think the OBDII on x300 was sophisticated enough to tell which cylinder the missfire is. I'd be glad to be proved wrong.

Many thanks for that information. I had a look at the workshop manuals on DTCs/codes and sure enough there are codes for cylinder misfires. I've had the occasional misfire but never any codes thrown up. How long would it take to throw a code? I know I had a dead spark plug but drove the car for about 30 minutes. No code was shown. Thanks again, every day is a school day....
Are you using the "basic" AutoEnginuity Scan tool or did you add the Enhanced Jaguar Expansion?
I'm using the basic Autoenginuity. I've never had any misfire codes but as said before, have had occasional but definate misfire. I'd considered the Jaguar expansion but as I've a 1995 car, I didn't think it would have given all that more information. I'm happy to hear from other x300 owners who do have the expansion.
Thank you to everyone that has given me so much input, it's nice to know that there is so much help out there from you all. I think I'll have to invest in a scanner since, as Baby_Jag said, its stupidly expensive to get scanned once from these guys.
I did try multiple stores with different shift managers and every time they heard "its a jaguar" is like I told them it was AIDS. They completely changed their tone and said "we dont really service your car at all."
I was told by one of the mechanics that I need an OBD 1.5, whatever that is.
I live in the GTA so I'm hoping that someone, at some place will have a scanner I can buy for cheap. I'm in grad school so I've quite literally got no money, just letters behind my name haha
Does anyone know if this OBD 1.5 is something I should look into or was that guy wrong?

OBD 1.5, huh? I think that idiot is trying to say it is not quite OBDII, which is essential;ly true of the MY 95 X-300 system. It may not FULLY comply with the OBD spec since the spec was still fluid when the system was designed, but it absolutely communicates with the ISO 9141 version of OBD, which almost every Asian car uses. Therefore, I bet most any scanner can do ISO 9141, but surely a guy in grad school can read the scanner specs, right?

Bluetooth ODB II scanner
and this app for my android phone:
Torque
thoughts?

It might be worth it (since it's only $28USD) to buy one, return if bad, get another, return if bad, until you get a good unit (for someone else)

I checked their website out and liked what I saw. I just wasn't sure I want to dump another $200+ USD for the Jag Expansion ... or if I REALLY needed to.
Maybe start with the base system and upgrade in the future ... I may upgrade to an XK8 ragtop, so it'll be covered.
What I'd REALLY like is a programmer - i.e., to program the ECU/ECM.
I don't know ... after reading the feedback from David K. Wilson and a couple of others, personally, I would not chance it. A 50% success rate on getting a unit that works all the time - I personally wouldn't chance it. But, then again, that's my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've seen the jaguar enhancement stuff on the website too and believe it states it's a 1996 car? Looks impressive although the feedback I got from another forum wasn't as enthusiastic about it.
