Wipers stopped working

Hello,
I encountered a problem with my wipers while it was raining yesterday. I heard a slight "clunk", and the wiper arm stopped in the middle of the windshield. It then moved spastically to the passenger side, paused, and stopped completely. When I turn the switch to any position (intermittent, low, high), it looks like the wiper arm wants to move, but it doesnt. I checked the arm when I reached my destination, and I can freely move it from one side of the windshield to the other while the car is off.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

I have had this problem also. It happened to me after a dumb greasemonkey turned the wipers on with the wiper frozen to the windshield. There is an arm that is pressed to a cylinder via a 8mm nut. The cylinder and arm have grooves that make everything work. The grooves are stripped. You must remove the whole assembly and disassemble everything until you get to these grooves. I put new grooves on the male side with a Dremel. The female side I did with a very small file. They don't have to be exact but they will work. The biggest pain is the removal and installation. Let me know if you need further help.

It could be as simple as the nut on the wiper blade assembly back off enough to disengage the spline as mine did a couple weeks ago. At the base of the wiper blade assembly flip up the black cover, tighten the nut. Good luck.

Just tighten the nut, it came loose. It will operate even with stripped grooves if the nut is tightened properly. Make it nice and snug but not TOO tight. I like to use a battery powered 3/8 impact driver...quick zap and it's done
