Unhappy X300 Keys and chips

Hi all.
I think this ought to be easy - but the chips are fragile so I'll ask first.

Swapped out my steering column for a replacement. Long story...
Replacement has a working and un-worn key.
Old column has 2 rather ratty keys that nonetheless still work.

Can I take the chip out of an old ratty key and put it in the new one - avoiding having to either have the new one reprogrammed or swap the ignition barrels over?
If so - how! I see there seems to be a 'plugged opening' in the key. is this where the chip is and can it be extracted?

Thanks in advance.
Rob

The later V - 8 X308 did come with a chip exciter / transponder in the steering coluum in North America

The X300 did not have chip in key in North America
