X300 - Think my Diff seals are bad!
Hi there,
I'm new to the forum - and new to my X300 (1995 4.0L Sovereign) - which I absolutely love.
After a month or so of ownership, I am gradually putting together the snagging list - of little jobs that simply need doing. Truth be told, there aren't many.
One thing, though, does concern me.
After a long(ish) drive, I get a distinct smell of gearbox oil, near the rear of the car. The tranny is fine (shifts smoothly) and there are no nasty noises from the back end - so I guess this is probably just oil seals in the diff?
Has anyone done this job to their own car (or is it best left to a man with a two post lift)? Also, where will I find the filler / level plug - so I can replenish any lost oil until the seals (or whatever) are fixed. Presumably, this will be something like Hypoid 90 Gear Oil (sorry, but I didnt get a handbook with the car!)
Any help / guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ian.

The filler is on the back of the differential about 2/3rd up. I use a 90 weight synthetic.
I have a slight "weep" on the driver's side seal on mine, but not even enough to drip. Just a bit messy down there. You'll know if you have a leak if there is gunk built up on the axles or drips below the differential.
