I use 5/30 in my X300, year round. Unless you sense that there's extreme wear on the engine I don't think anything as heavy as 20/50 is needed.

Cheers

I use 5w50 in my 1996 VDP as per the manual suggest for the widest temperature gradient.

It's good to go heavier on an engine with higher miles in most cases. The motor in my X300 consumed too much on lighter viscosity oil (however there is only a minor external leak at the pan and NO blue smoke out the back)...so the valve seals should be in decent shape. I have 20W-50 in it right now for the summer and it will be converted to 5W-40 for the cold New England winter. 5W-50, as Canadian-XJ6 mentioned would also be fine for year round or as a winter oil, as it is still a 5 weight oil in temperatures below 32 degrees. The number following the "-" refers to the viscosity in warmer temperatures

Default XJR6 Oil Viscosity

Hi Doug

the AJ16S in our XJR6 are only supposed to take a 0W-40, 5W-40, 10W-40 or 50 weights. Only when the temperatures remain consistently below freezing is a fully synthetic 0W-30 or 5W-30 oil allowed. The 5W-30 is approved for the non-supercharged AJ16 engines.

I agree with Jaguar's recommendation, given the increased torque that our engines produce and thus higher the main/connecting rod bearing load. (the increase over the regular AJ16 is even higher than the net torque increase as the supercharger 'eats' some of that torque increase)
Having sufficient film strength is important to long bearing life.

I use only oils which have an HTHS of 3.7 or higher in the XJR6 - which most synthetic 5W-40 have.

Most German car manufacturers require an HTHS of 3.5+ for their oil specifications.

Well, I see I am rather late to this thread, so I'll try and be brief.

Just go to the following link and read away; http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/cms/ Go to the forum there as well. Lots of great info!

With all due respect to others, I will put my two bits on Mobil 1 15w50. But just about any grade of Mobil's synthetics oils will be vastly superior to any conventional oil. I have first hand experience with the differences, and am confident recommending Mobil as about the best oil out there. There are many other brands of synthetic that will likely be just as good, but my experience is with Mobil. Just be ready to replace any worn or damaged gaskets and seals! Synthetic washes away any sludge that may be hiding any defects in short order. This is a good thing IMHO! Head over to the link above! It is well worth the read.

Again, I mean no disrespect for the opinions of others whose knowledge and experience is clearly far greater than mine. Although based on experience, and supported by authoritative sources, this is only my opinion. I mean no disrespect.
