Default 00' XJR possible purchase

Hello all, I'm very excited about possibly picking this car up later in the week and very glad I've found this site to help me out on making an informed decision on it. Feeling somewhat comfortable on looking further into this ride based on the infor I've gained here.

Been looking around here for several days already to learn the basics...I have not seen the car in person yet, 2000 xjr, 97k mi. I've learned the car has been dealer maintained, tensioners, water pump, have already been done some time ago, brand new tires.

The guy who has it bought it from his neighbor who is a good friend (a woman 2nd owner)last month and has not driven it except to have the tires installed. The lady needed some cash and did not like what the dealer offered her for it... he bought it to help help her out of her situation and seems to not really know any particulars on the car. He is asking just abouve 10k for it which is rather high from what i have researched. He claims to have a papertrail on the car, and says he can arrange a phone call to woman he bought it from... I know this is long winded but the story from this guy seem fishy. Time will tell.

Any input on other things to question this guy on will be greatly appreciated. [ATTACH]3

Way, way high in my opinion. For 10k you can get a really, really solid 2002-2003.

Here's one for 7900: Cars for Sale: 2003 Jaguar XJR in Hopkins, MN 55343: Sedan Details - 333964634 - AutoTrader.com

I don't have a problem with my 2000 XJR don't see why the 2002 or 2003 is sooo much better if the tensioner issues have been fixed but I'm new to them as well. I have seen some with waaaayy less miles for 6K or less with the same paper trails etc... I paid $4,250 for my 2000 XJR, super clean car all the original panels everywhere. It had 137K when I bought it. Tensioners done etc....keep shopping no way I would pay anywhere near 10 unless it was an XJR100

Thanks BMC & Marco,
I agree, like i said on my first post, something just does not add up here ... He sounds verrry uninformed on the phone, even more so than I am. Also think he may have over paid himself,or he's hoping and waiting for a sucker? I'll know when I go to see him and the car. What ever the case is, he'll probably not be very receptive to my thoughts on pricing. I'm hoping for the best though.
I know what to pay attention to as far as drivability with a "regular" car, driven vettes, and muscle cars etc... but nothing in this class -- anything in particular i should be attentive to with the suspension, SC, ect..?

Mine biggest problem I dealt with suspension wise was oil leaks caused a degradation of the control arm bushings, it still has a little clinking sound every once I a whole but when the bushing was shot it was considerably louder and distinctive. Just look for leaks and such cause that will show signs of lack of care. If it was cared for everything else will fall into place.

I agree that at $10k this car does not make much sense. It would be a good deal at around $7k and a great deal at $6k. Like you've said, perhaps the seller didn't know the market and overpaid or he wants to get the top $$ for the car. I'm leaning towards the latter as there's no way the dealer would have even been on the same continent as $10k. I bet he paid $6-$7k and now is trying to make same $$.

He is not going anywhere fast at that price. Hit him at $6000. If he goes into shock, just show him ads of cars currently for sale. That should bring him to reality. Before pulling the final trigger though, I would have the car inspected by the Jag specialist. I'm sure there'll be some items needing attention that you can use to bring the seller down to reality.

Default Very close to pulling trigger on 02 xjr

The 00 fell through.... sights are set on an 02 xjr w/86k on it. I have it being inspected at jag dealer today. The only known issue so far is that the Mercedes dealer that has it ran the battery dead and set off the security system and the car would not run above 50mph..... they had to send it to the jag guys to reset. Hope all goes well! Has anyone used an inspection service called "Inspect My Ride"? I'm buying from out of state and am relying accurate insp. info. Any thoughts?

I'm glad you passed on the Y2K. I think you ran into a "flipper" there. Guy was hoping to make a quick buck. There are MANY like him in CA.

Thanks Daniel, i think so too...it was very strange..could never talk on the phone for more than a couple of min...every excuse you can imagine was given for not allowing me to even see it. i had my wife call him from a diff number and he was much more receptive to her conversations, but still would never commit to viewing it. i was finished w/him after that.

Guess i was charging too much for mine, but it does have some time/money into it since I've had it. I think I'm better off keeping it seeing the current market. These cars are the best bang for the buck out there.

If I was you I would look for a 100 and nothing less. Get the best one if you're going to do it.

That's a sound advice, however......they are like "hen's teeth". I'd be happy to find a 2003 XJR with less than 100K on the clock, and a salvage title.

Congrats on the purchase -- have a nice time in Miami! I live close to Miami and get down there are few times a year. If you get a chance before heading back north, you might like driving your new ride to the Keys (esp. if you've never been there before) -- that's a really great place!

Have fun! Your return trip to Michigan will be fun! If you're looking for fun, and not in a hurry to get back up north, you might take Alligator Alley over to the west coast of Florida and wind your way up the gulf coast -- some really nice places over there, too.

If you're in a hurry to get home, take the turnpike to I-75 north of Orlando and head up to Georgia.

Thanks Mike, great advice... I may just take a look at the Keys area, never been, and have always wanted to see.

Cannot wait to get her into the hills and curves of Tennessee and Kentucky! I was already considering the route up through the panhandle, Pensacola and Alabama...love Alabama. Plus more hills and curves!

Default Congrats on getting the ONE!

Very, very nice. Hope that XJR Prototype is correct about the brakes, that's a huge bonus. Here're the pics of mine.
