Read thru years-old threads of how to pop the hood open when driver side won't release. Can't believe it's such an involved process, including drilling a 1" hole. Anyone have an update, like a metal coat hanger under the back edge of the hood to pull it? "Hope springs eternal"

Having done mine (on the passenger side) I seriously doubt a coat hanger would work, and might end up doing much more damage that drilling the hole. The latch is quite a distance from the edge of the hood. Even with the hole, and a boroscope to visualize the field of battle, getting the screwdriver positioned to pop the latch was challenging. However, once it’s done, your inner fender liner will cover the hole and the work will be invisible. I hit the edges of the hole with some paint and covered it with a waterproof tape to be safe.
There are few reasons why the hood is not releasing:
1. Broken cable - release through 1" hole
2. Loose cable or cable detached from the hood release lever - access cable connections to the hood release lever and try pulling directly the offending cable
3. Hood pin out of alignment with the socket - the only way would be to try with hitting the bonnet with your palm at various points around the pin area, and/or to wiggle the bonnet, while the opening cable is held pulled
Can't believe it's such an involved process, including drilling a 1" hole.
So, you want some thief to just to be able to easily lift your bonnet with a coat hanger and go about his business? Just do what Gator8 and many of us have done, especially spraying the exposed metal when done. But be sure to put a piece of tape over the top of the latch insert so as not to over spray the hood.
