That went easier than I thought it would. ..
Is that part of the seal from the timing chain cover..? Also should I take the collet out, it all came out together.
Not sure if that is part of the crank seal..........take a picture of the timing cover.
Yes, clean the balancer up and take that collet out, make note of the very thin rubber O-ring seal inside there...........it is included in the kit you got from Christopher's.
Morning guys...
Timing chain cover is off and it looks like someone had been here before me...
Didn't notice it before , this is the passenger side .looks like it's been upgraded?
In case you are wondering, those "hand grenade pins" included in the alignment tool kit are for retaining a the tensioners during assembly. The tensioners come pre-locked with "pushpin" style pins, but these pushpins are too large to allow fitment on a couple of the tensioners, and so you replace the thicker pushpins with the slim "hand grenade pins" for assembly. Don't forget to remove all pushpins and hand grenade pins before fitting the timing cover.
Morning CK...
All I did so far is just Removed the timing chain cover...
What you see in those pictures is what is there...
I didn't replace anything...
Who knows....
not sure where to go from here everything but that tensioner looks new...
Well i cant say that of the chains...... Looking up how to check timing before going thu replacing everything...
Going to lock the converter now and see where the flats of the cams rest at...
You should be able to easily just replace that one plastic tensioner, will still need to install the crank positioning tool and cam locking plates.
I'm not sure that I would worry about the chains, they may or may not have been replaced, but it isn't the chains that are the problem, but the failure of the tensioners, so even IF those are the original chains they should be fine.
You may want to call Christopher's and explain the situation, they/he are/is really nice folk(s) and may refund for the kit. You would then have to buy one tensioner, a timing cover gasket, a crank seal, a seal for the balancer, a valve cover gasket, possibly a pair of VVT seals. Maybe there would not be that much of a savings?

I didn't buy that kit yet.. I wanted to see what i would find under the timing cover 1st... I just installed the crank positioning tool to get an idea of how the cams would line up, Drivers side is way off.
Passenger side is also off but not as much the cam position tool helps a little but not enough to get the cam locking tool to sit flush....
That's where im at now.....
If the cams do not line up keep rotating the crank until they do, AND the crankshaft positioning hole lines up too, that is the correct position for timing.
Not sure what the pictures are in your last post? Well, it's the crankshaft seal, but not sure what you think is missing?

Hey CK ..
I tried it, Turned the engine over 6 time and every 2nd time the cams come back to the same spot...
Im thinking when it was messed with last the by whoever the timing was set rite ...
I know on ford and volvo you have to adjust the VVT / Sprocket to insure timing is set...
Isnt that the same with this engine??
The Last Picture is the Crankshaft seal on the timing cover...

Hmm, could be, but if one cam is off I would think either a valve would hit a piston, or at the very least it would run like crap.

The VVT's are hydraulic and should return to fully retarded when the engine isn't running. There is a tool in the set that is designed to turn the VVT to fully retarded but I've never got it to work, and I know many/most others haven't either.

Seal looks fine, just needs replacing with a new one?
Ok if the cams are't lining ? Do i loosen the Sprocket bolt and give the camshaft that tiny turn?.
There off enough that i can not get the Flat Bar to Sit flush.....
Not Really finding that information, but im still reading... Unless im missing something... i know the driver side isnt going make a differences until i replace the tensioner..
Hmm, I'm not sure, it would be good to know why the cam(s) are not sitting flat, it could be that one of them, the driver-side exhaust, is not timed right, but difficult to know with not knowing what the previous owner/mechanic did when it was down. It is VERY puzzling why that side secondary tensioner was not replaced, makes me suspect there is a problem hidden in there somewhere.
