Default '02 XJR Fuel Pump Replacement - Help with Parts and Tools to Buy List, Please

Hi, it looks like both fuel pumps have died on my 2002 XJR w/ 125K miles. She's DOA in a parking lot about a mile from my house right now. I plan to have her towed back to my house tomorrow.

I would like to fix the car over the weekend (I'm an experienced hack mechanic, have all the normal hand and air tools on hand), but I need to get my parts and any specialty tools together ASAP. I have 3 children; a 5 year old, 3 year old, and a 3 month old baby. My time is severely limited to do research unfortunately. I would very much appreciate any part numbers, links to posts, etc that will help. I'm not asking to be spoonfed, but I just don't have several hours to surf looking for info right now, and I need the car up and running for next week.

What do I need besides 2 pumps, a new fuel filter, and a tool to undo the fuel line quick disconnects under the tank?

Any help is really appreciated,

Mike

Do you know for sure that Both pumps are dead? I had one (Primary) die which left me stranded on the side of the road. I went to the trunk and swapped the wires which allowed me to drive home on the Secondary without paying the tow fee (wires found on top of the tank). I cut the wires and connected them with wire connectors. Patched, but saved me a couple hundred on a tow (45+ miles) in the middle of the night.

Well, the car died on Tuesday and would only start and idle for a couple seconds before stalling. You could hear the pump prime. I pulled the #1 pump relay, and the car started and ran fine with "restricted performance". Then yesterday it wouldn't start again, and this time I can't hear the pump prime, and it will barely hold an idle, super rough, just a hair above stalling. Won't rev.

I have towing coverage, and have it home on the garage now, no charge.

Will do a bit more troubleshooting tomorrow, but the symptoms indicate both pumps have failed to me.

This is a procedure for a 2000 XK8 but it could give you a little guidance Link JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource The procedure is near the same. I hope this helps.

Yeah, I only mentioned the wire swap for getting off the road in an emergency. But, for sure, when you are in there, replace both. It's a decent job getting in there.

I did the replacement, and unfortunately, my primary died about a year later. So, for the past few months, I've been running on the swapped wired pump until I can get the strength to get back in there. Illness has slowed me down a bit... But, I'll get it asap.

This is the type of disconnect tool that works, you need thin double jointed arms to get at them!
6 PC Air Conditioning/Fuel Line Disconnect Tool Set - Lisle on eBay!

It's ebay uk but I'm sure you'll find them locally. Avos has also fabricated a long version from plastic plumbing tube, heating/slitting and shaping to fit - If you do a search you should find it. It's a bit laborious but extremely satisfying when the car fires up.

Another way is to disconnect the filler tube and straps and rock the tank until you can get at the top door from inside the trunk, that is if you can't disconnect, just release the tube to the fuel filter and you *might* have enough wiggle room to get at the pumps without messing underneath, hope this helps
