can anyone advise me where the 'spring clips' fit on the front brake pads.

Might have a little better luck in the S-type forums (this is the X308 XJ8 side). Someone might know, having experience with both though. If you haven't posted over there, would recommend it tho!

 

First thing of note is you are posting in the XJ8/XJR section. Some of the members here may also have an s-type but you would be better off in the s-type section for help.
It would also help if you noted what year and model your car is.

To help you on the brakes the link below will take you to a site where you can download the Tech Manual for your vehicle. There are a few clips and pieces so the book is your best bet.
