03 xj8 tranny problems. Stuck in 4th
Hi
Starting today my car started to have some transmission problems out of the blue. Drove fine in the morning but later when I drove back home the tranny started to act up.
At first it would rev in gear and not engage the gear for a second and then would jerk as it went into gear. It would do this 1-2 then would skip 3rd and go to 4th.
After doing this for about 3 stop and goes, it now is only in 4th it feels like. It won't shift down to anything below 4th at a stop. I can still drive it but it's in 4th so I feels like a slug up until 40mph. I didn't try giving it some gas to have it downshift fearing that would be bad. I have tried using the J shifter from 2-4 and it doesn't shift down still.
At a stop I can change from P or N into D or R with no unusual delay(takes about the same amount of time as normal before the problems, approx 1sec). No jerks or loud noises when changing P R N D.
I have no idea where to start to diagnose this problem. I've read it could be as easy as low fluid, which I see some wet spots under the car on the tranny or the tranny computer. I'm about to go jack up the car and take a look.
What should I do to start looking for a solution?
