I just bought my xj8 at an auction, and i am trying to work out the bugs. it has 99300 miles on it i've changed the coolant sensor already, but when i start it pu the engine seems to be a bit loud, like a tapping .also when driving sometimes i can see the rpm needle dip abit and i can hear the engine do the same. is this the plugs. i'm no mechanic.

 

Let's start slowly.

Is the check engine light on? If so, what codes?

What maintenance history do you have? Without a history we need to see the cam chain tensioners.

At 99k miles it is scheduled for plug change. Put that on your list.

I would add a MAFS, throttle body and breather hose cleaning.

Without a history of maintenance I would also do the fuel filter and the air filter.

the light came on for the coolant sensor a a code p1000 i changed the sensor and the light came off, i dont know what the p1000 code was, but i will get the plugs done. thanks much, so far i am liking the car and i want to get it right.

 

P1000 is reporting that the required number of 'drive cycles' has not occurred since the codes were reset. No problem, it will go away when you drive it.

 

about how much should it be to change the plugs and the fuel filter , i have no idea on a jag. also would like to know if there are any good jag mechanics close to yeadon or philly.
