Default 1998 XJ8 Code P0741

Hi
My 98 xj8 is showing code P0741, torque converter clutch solenoid etc..
I have seen a number of postings for the newer xj8, but this does not seem to be the same info for the earlier XJ models. The transmission does seem to shift ok, although when cold a slight shudder is barely noticable.
Does any one have more info on this.
Also car does blow a bit of smoke out the pipes at 5500- 6600 RPM- Normal?
It is a nikasil engine with 143000 kilometers on it.
Car runs well and i have replaced both primary/secondary chains a newest style tensioners. I purchased the car not running at 140000KM.
Cheers Rick M.

you need a new tc, that shudder is probobly a symptom of the convertor clutch and this is what the code and tsb is for.
on the smoke, normal for mileage and nikasil, add "engine restore" avail at any auto parts store with every oil change. Its not a 1 use fix for good product, but a very good product Ive used very successfully over the years for issues like this

Hi Brutal,

I have the same code. The car seems to shift fine. I have cleared the code 3x times and get it keeps coming back when I go over 55 mph. I have 133000 miles on the XK8 2002 and never changed the filter.

My questions are:
How much is a TC replacement?
Is there any other troubleshooting step I can do?
I saw a technote on the adding an additive?

Thank you very much!
James

hi brutal, currently having the same issues, but tc is working fine?
back when i posted my number i was in MISSOURI, drove the car with the same code across the country to arizona, have fixed tons of issues but this same ****ing code still comes back. although id like to add that i did have a leak in the transmission that was repaired and fluid was added. no filter change, they just added fluid. mechanic said i didnt need it til a later date. i recently drove the car on 200 mile round trip to las vegas and it drove fine, had the check engine come on, scanned it, and again i have it. it comes and goes, but the tc always does its job. anyways, do you think this is a electrical issue? i do notice sometimes when i'm accelerating i notice the rpms jump when on the highway suddenly.. maybe thats not a good way to describe it, but it maybe it's actually going out?

1998 XJ8 with 109,500.

My car has recently displayed this code (along with a P1462). I did have one issue when one day I first started the car after driving to work and noticed it lost 1st gear and when the accelerator was depressed hard, she would not drop down into any lower gears. I pulled over, shut the engine off then restarted and the problem was gone...

I finally got my transmission problems cleared up. it had 2 problems, the first one was that the TCM had **** the bed, $60 for a used on off ebay.
2nd problem was after transmission removal the o-ring on the "A" drum was defective and one thrust bearing was starting to fail. I had a transmission shop R&R the transmission and do the o-ring replacement for $1600 and all is great now.
