1998 xj8 help needed!!!!!!!!
I replaced my 5hp24 with a used unit from a wrecked car and the shop after checking the tran says that the car is still in LIMP mode. They are asking me if there is any info on how to reset the computer. The trans a-drum was good and pressure tested good. Any help would be appreciated.
Thankyou

There are really only two ways to reset the TCM/ECM modules.
First, remove the negative cable from the battery post. Touch it to the positive post of the battery for a few seconds. That will drain all the capacitive voltage from the entire car and make everything reboot from scratch. Sorta like turning off a PC when all else fails.
If that doesn't work the next level is to have a dealer re flash the TCM.

I agree. If you're in limp mode a fault code had to put you there. There is a lot more information about what they did and what they replaced that is unknown. I can think of a few items that would impact the powertrain simply by changing the trans but it is all guessing. Disconnecting the battery won't correct a hard fault and reflashing modules is used to change or update software programs stored in memory, so neither of these is likely going to get you any farther than you are right now.
Did the shop try codes? If they only have a simple scan tool they're not neccessarily going to see everything that might be there. If it were mine, I'd be looking to move the car out and to the next level repair place with diagnostic equipment as it appears this place has done all they are capable of doing for you.

re; imput appreciated
Thanks for the imput. the shop (relaible transmission) is telling me that there are no codes being thrown. They are waiting for a new Snap-on reader that may be able to show the codes. I would move the car to a new shop, but I am on the hook to these guys for $1000 already, not counting the $1000 I paid for a transmission. Does anyone know if the snap-on tool can read the tools, and why is my typing itlaizied. Computers and jags are no of my business. Thanks again for any help.
