Welcome to the forum Tena Herbert,

1. Even a new Thermostat can be faulty so worth checking it definitely does open. Also that the 'giggle pin' is at the top:

This allows air to bleed and some coolant to pass if the Thermostat is closed.

2. Did you check the Water Pump? Impeller blades can fail on the early pumps.

3. blocked Radiator - either internally or the matrix.

4. correct coolant - mixing early green and later OAT Long Life coolant causes a gel to form which can block the system.

5. does the Heater work? There's a small electric pump in the system that aids circulation of coolant to the Heater. These can fail.

If the correct coolant is circulating properly, there could be a Cylinder Head gasket problem. This can sometimes, though not always, lead to coolant contamination in the oil or vice versa. A compression check is the way to test for Head or gasket problems.

That would be good to know.

Member Tena Herbert hasn't been back on the forum since five minutes after posting the question.

Resurrecting an old thread, I had the exact same problem with my 2003 XJ8.

What I have done so far is replace the plastic OEM thermostat housing with the Welsh Enterprises aluminum model, with new thermostat. So far no more popped hoses. I did still have a leak, so replaced the lower rad hose today.

Fingers crossed!

I had my rad hose blowing off. The electric cooling fans had blown their fuses. Once they were working, no more problems. On a '98, the water pump is highly suspect if it has never been replaced.
