Default 1998 xj8 rear shock clunk

I have a 1998 XJ8 with 111k on it. I bought it from a person that had let it sit for around 5 years due to a fuel pump issue. it is in extremely good shape inside and out. I have it running good and working out all the little bugs from sitting. When i noticed that when I hit a mid size bump or larger a I get a deep sounding clunk from the rear area. I have inspected all of the suspension parts, not finding anything to be and issue. While the car was on jack stands I jacked up the wheel and watched the top of shock. as it went up so did the piece attached to the top of what I could see of the shock. Not sure what that piece is. I thought it would just be the shock shaft going up to the mount. Has anyone dealt with this before or tore one down. Thanks for any help.

All of the rubber parts are shot, a common problem. Access the sng Barrett catalog online to see the relevant parts.

Agreed. The rubber hard foam pads on mine had turned to dust.

To replace the shocks or rubbers, you have to remove the rear suspension. I tried it the other way, and learnt some new swear words.

The rear suspension does NOT need to be removed, only the arms lowered enough to get the springs/dampers out and back in.
