I just ordered mine from rockauto.com. Bought an AC Delco unit w the metal impeller for 42? Figure there can't be that many places actually making the pumps. I'm sure they are mostly made from one company maybe w a few different requisites from the supplier.

Thanks Chris. I am upgrading housing to metal and new t-stat. Wanted to upgrade waterpump while I am in there. Just getting all the parts together. (metal impeller on the pump was important)

Did you already find the t-stat housing parts etc? I think a lot of folks have gotten the Welsh replacement parts and have been pretty happen. You can get them on ebay for cheap.

the metal impellers can cause cavitation, just use the upgraded Jaguar part.

So, is cavitation also the main contributor to the problem of the old design impellers, or was it just brittle material?

Is the upgraded Jaguar part still plastic?

The original pump in the AJ26 had a black ( I think) plastic impeller that fell apart, probably heat related. Since then they have a white impeller, as do most aftermarket pumps, and these are good. I'm not sure about the metal impeller, but the consensus appears to be that they do not hold up because of cavitation, which may be related to the type of antifreeze used. I recall reading that high silicon antifreeze prevents cavitation, but is not compatible with the Jag engine.
Please guys, I am not trying to start another coolant discussion, but correct me if I have the story wrong.

Sean & RJ: Of course I haven't been an X308 owner that long comparatively, and I haven't read every post, etc., on the subject; but this is the first time I've heard this. Isn't conventional wisdom/practice that the early plastic-impellered water pumps be replaced with metal? Hasn't pretty much everyone done this? I am honestly curious and wish to learn.

Cheers!

No, all the recommendations I have seen are to replace the early pump, but not specifically with metal.I believe if you go to a Jag dealer you will get a plastic impeller.
I have a metal impeller in my XJ6 and it doesn't cause undue concern, but the pump design is not the same, either.

I'd advise getting an "Airtex" Pump. It's what Jaguar supply now and is upgraded from the old.

Well, I replaced my water pump with a metal-impellered one a few years back before I got the memo about cavitation. Cavitation means having cavities, or a vacuum created in the coolant around the vanes. I haven't noticed any problem. I suppose it might affect coolant flow ? I was on a "chuck the plastic kick" at the time, replacing the secondary cam chain tensioners, thermostat housing and water pump.

Jimmyl, I am on the "chuck the plastic kick" too. However, I think I am going with the updated waterpump with plastic impeller. All other parts going with metal.

Sounds like a good plan.
